10 lessons learnt at SES San Jose ’09

Attending Search Engine Stragegies 2009 in San Jose, California taught me some things. Thank god there were exactly 10 of them …

  1. Everybody has an iPhone. Everybody.
  2. Use Google Local Business Center to help your customers find you when searching local.
  3. If Matt Cutts cuts his hair the world of SEO stops breathing for a moment.
  4. There were times when give-aways were more interesting. Compared to the iPhones given away by Google last year their 3 $ flashlight wasn´t very appealing. Blame credit crunch.
  5. If you are really cool, read the retweet of a tweet about somthing that is going on right in front of you instead of actually listening to it.
  6. Nick Fox didn´t do a favor to Google holding a keynote. »We should all say thanks to my company for what it has achieved« isn´t a really good core message in my opinion.
  7. About content, storytelling and link building: It´s all there in your company. You just have to be ask the right questions, be aware of it, write it and deliver it!
  8. Have Post-it Notes with your keywords pinned to your screen, so you never forget to drop them in the content you write. In my case, I almost can’t see if I’ve written »graphic design« and »Austria« often enough because of all the »web design« and »Vienna«-Post-its on my Netbook ;-)
  9. The world of User-generated content is scary for a lot of companies. We have to show them that you must be part of this movement to be aware of what is going on. It’s the only way to have a certain amount of control.
  10. There is a surprisingly high rate of people that are trying to cheat on search engines AND asking representatives of Google in Site Clinic-Sessions about what’s wrong with their websites.
