As a graphic and web designer from Austria attending the Search Engine Stragtegies Conference in San Jose, California, there were some things to learn about the United States of America:

Lesson 1

American food appears in quite a good light if you had a flight on a British airline first.

Lesson 2

“Great. Everything in Arabic …” (due to your last sailing trip that accidently ended up in Morocco) is not what you want to hear from the security guy at the airport, looking at the stamps in your passport.

Lesson 3

Cars can be bigger than the houses they stand in front of.

Lesson 4

Due to Arnold Schwarzenegger, Austria is quite well known in California. People referr to him as “being huge” and speaking bad english. Let me tell you: his german isn´t any better!

Lesson 5

To be allowed to turn right even if the traffic lights are on red might be one of the great accomplishments of American Culture. Why don´t we have that over here?

Lesson 6

If you had a bad day, it must be quite hard not to bore people with your story, because there might be hundreds of them asking you about how you were doing.

Lesson 7

The GPS in the rental car explained the words “yes” and “no” to the user. No lie.

Lesson 8

Climate and weather in California must be the reason for people being that friendly – it´s just awsome!

Lesson 9

awsome. That´s one of the words … you know … I heared them so often, I was likeoh my gosh! Now I´m doing it too! Amazing!

Lesson 10

Being asked for an ID at the age of 26 when ordering a beer is a strange experience but blows away any thoughts about growing old!
